For some, the CRM system of an organisation is like its beating heart. So, extracting parts of it from the parent company during a carve-out may feel like open heart surgery!
Capabilities, commercials, data and functionality need to be carved out to create a business-as-usual eco-system in the new organisation.

Discovery, prototyping and requirements engineering
- What is the existing architecture of the CRM system and what will be required in the new one?
- What functionality is in place and needs to be replicated?
- What is the minimum viable product necessary to keep the new business operational?
- What are the critical success factors (CSFs)?
Implementation considerations
- Who owns the data and where is it located?
- What’s the data separation and migration process?
- Which systems will be affected across each business function (HR, finance, marketing etc.)?
- What are the time constraints and cost constraints?
- What is time will be taken in the contract negotiation and procurement process?
People, future-proofing and outsourcing considerations
- What are the key CRM processes that are required in its future state?
- Who are the internal and external stakeholders, who looks after the new system in the future?
- Is there a Target Operating Model (TOM)?
- Which vendors are we considering? Is an RFP required?
- What needs to be included in the transition service agreement (TSA)?
By answering these questions, you can go some way to determining the resources you’ll need to carve-out your CRM, what sort of team you need to build and who you need to work with, both internally and externally to plan and execute a successful CRM carve-out.
